SUBJECT SAMPLER
INTRODUCTION

Welcome to my Subject Sampler on 'colour'.  You will never again take colour for granted after completing this Sampler.  Learn about the theory of colour, why we make deliberate colour choices, how it affects our feelings and moods, our favourite food colours, the tricks our eyes play with colour, and how we can save energy by choosing colour wisely.  Have a colourific time!

Primary Colours
 
  1. What are the three primary colours?
  2. Why are they called 'primary'?
  3. Using a drawing program, make a drawing using only primary colours.
 
Colours and Feelings
 
  1. Do you have a favourite colour?  Why?
  2. How does that colour make you feel?
  3. What does it mean by 'you make me see red'?
  4. What colours make you feel relaxed and calm?
  5. When you wear bright colours, does it affect your mood?
  6. Colour your cabin to reflect the way you feel today.
Warm and Cool Colours
 
  1. Look at the room you are in.  Are the main colours, warm colours or cool colours?
  2. Make a mind picture.  Think of a beach scene.  What warm colours do you see?  Are these things really warm?  What cool colours do you see?  Are these things really cool?
  3. Using a drawing program, draw this beach scene, using both warm and cool colours.
 
Colour and the Brain
  1. Why did the bride wear green? (1st picture)
  2. Why do you think?  Would you stop for a green Stop sign? (2nd picture)
  3. If you were buying a car, what colour would it be?  Why?  Read these stories.  How does car colour affect driver behaviour? (3rd picture)
Colour and the Body

  2. Why do scientists say that we are not attracted to blue food? (1st picture)
  3. What is the effect of 'drunk tank pink' on prisoners? (2nd picture)

  1. Why wouldn't you paint a baby's nursery in bright yellow? (1st picture)
  2. Complete the exercise with the black dot in the red rectangle.  Did you 'see red'?  What colour was your after image?  Explain why. (1st picture)
  3. Complete the second exercise with the black dot in the white star.  What did you see?  Why? (1st picture)
Colour and Energy
  1. What colours reduce energy?
  2. What colour is your bedroom?  Is it making efficient use of energy?
  3. Look at the room you're in, is the colour scheme conducive to reducing energy?
 
Colour and Theory
  1. Who designed the first colour wheel?
  2. How are secondary colours made?  What are they?
  3. How are tertiary colours made?  Name two tertiary colours.
  4. Give an example of harmonious colours in nature.
  5. Give an example of complementary colours in nature.
