Introduction

Australia hasn't always been a nation of eight states and territories as we know them today. Over time, the borders have changed and the states have evolved to create their own identities. Let's take a trip around Australia, past and present, and meet the states.

Floral and faunal emblems
  1. Make a table listing the floral and faunal emblems of all Australian states and territories.
  2. Which two states or territories don't have a faunal emblem?
  3. Why do you think they decided on these particular plants and animals?
Geography of Australia
  1. Use the first map to name the states and territories of Australia.
  2. Use the second topographical map to list the 5 most mountainous states and list the names of the deserts you can see.
  3. Discuss why you think 75% of Australia is called 'the outback'.
Flags of Australia
  1. What do the five state flags have in common with the national flag , and what do the two territory flags have in common with the national flag?
  2. What are three other territories of Australia outside our coastlines?
  3. The Navy, Air Force and Army (civil services) all protect Australia from invasion....What are the main colours of these flags?

Conclusion

Now that you have taken a quick tour around Australia, you should be able to tell a foreigner about the many features and tourist attractions that can be found in each state of this great land. It is hoped that one day you will experience some of these for yourself.
