SUBJECT
SAMPLER
ENDANGERED
SPECIES
INTRODUCTION
Did you know that:
-
for every species that is alive today,
perhaps a thousand more have lived previously and become extinct
-
the current extinction crisis is unique
-
the causes of the crisis are the activities
of a single species: human beings
-
current rate of extinction appears to
be hundreds, or perhaps even thousands, of times higher than it would be
if there were no humans
-
the species that are most likely to
survive mass extinctions are cockroaches and weeds
-
human beings have created the factors
that threaten so many species today, and human beings can create the solutions
that will reverse the current extinctions crisis
There's no getting away from the fact
that we, as human beings, are involved in animal endangerment. As
is says above, we caused it, we can help to fix it. In this Subject
Sampler, you'll learn about how a group of people helped one species to
survive and flourish. When you have completed the activities, write
a paragraph answering the question: What changes did the people of
Meeps Island make to ensure the frogs survived?
