TEACHING MATHEMATICS
 USING COMPUTERS

40 ways – using

GAMES, INVESTIGATIONS AND INTERNET SITES

to integrate computers and mathematics

GAMES

1.         In Microsoft Excel, students make Mastermind game. (2 players)

2.         In Microsoft Drawing, students make 3 Frogs game. (single player)

3.         In Microsoft Excel, students make multiplication grid and practise their tables in a game format (2 players).

INVESTIGATIONS

4.         In Microsoft Word, Drawing, students use Basic Shapes, Block Arrows, Flow Charts and Stars and Banners to investigate symmetry.  The final suggested task of designing a symmetrical class logo is designed to extend them and to allow introduction of Grouping Tools.

5.         In Microsoft Word, Drawing, students investigate rotational symmetry (a shape has rotational symmetry if, when rotated, it maps back on itself) using Basic Shapes, Block Arrows, Flow Charts and Stars and Banners.

6.         In Microsoft Word, Drawing, students investigate concepts associated with angles – using line tools, grouping tools and colour tools.   They then move on to the Internet to extend their investigation and finish with a piece of freeware – MS LOGO.

7.         In Microsoft Word, Drawing, students investigate concepts associated with tessellations – using drawing tools and copy and paste functions.  Internet sites are accessed along different stages of the investigation.

8.         In Microsoft Word, Drawing, students experiment with using 3D shapes to create an object.  They then further their manipulation skills in using LegoCAD as the design tool.

9.         In Microsoft Word, students experiment with 3D shapes and create nets by examining the relationship between plane and 3D shapes.

10.       Firstly utilising tangram web sites which provide demonstrations and interactive opportunities related to tangrams, the students then work with Drawing Tools in Word to create their own tangram pictures.

11.       Students investigate the concept of function machines by first utilising web sites and then by using Microsoft Excel to complete their own.

12.       In Microsoft Word, Drawing, students investigate fractions by drawing their own Fraction House.

13.       In Microsoft Excel, students investigate which Lifesaver colour has the longest ‘suckability’.
